In a strategic diplomatic move, Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to visit China on August 31, marking a significant development in the growing alliance between Moscow and Beijing. The visit comes amid global geopolitical shifts and rising tensions over the war in Ukraine and expanding partnerships in the East.
According to a statement released Thursday by the Kremlin, President Putin will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping, attend a regional leadership summit, and take part in an official ceremony commemorating the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.
Putin’s aide Yuri Ushakov confirmed that the Russian president will join the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, scheduled from August 31 to September 1 in the city of Tianjin, China.
On September 2, Putin and Xi are expected to hold a bilateral meeting, followed by Putin’s participation in a large-scale event in Beijing on September 3, honoring the historical surrender of Japan in WWII.
Earlier this year, on May 9, President Xi was a guest of honor at Russia’s Victory Day military parade in Moscow, which commemorated 80 years since the defeat of Nazi Germany.
Putin and Xi frequently refer to each other as "dear friends" and have deepened their strategic ties in recent years. In fact, just days before Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Moscow signed a landmark strategic partnership agreement with Beijing.
However, critics argue that both countries are using World War II history as a political tool to justify their expansionist foreign policies. The anniversary events in September coincide with the official Japanese surrender in 1945, a historical moment that both Russia and China leverage to strengthen their nationalist narratives.
This upcoming visit is expected to further consolidate East Asian power blocs, potentially reshaping the global order in 2025 and beyond.
