Washington Divided Over Possible Strike on Iran: Here's What's Causing the Rift

As tensions between the U.S., Israel, and Iran hit a boiling point, veteran American diplomat David Satterfield has weighed in on Washington’s internal debate over a potential military strike on Iran—specifically targeting its heavily fortified Fordow nuclear facility.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Satterfield clarified that the controversy isn't about the potential consequences of a strike, but rather the effectiveness of such an operation in completely halting Iran's nuclear ambitions.

“It’s one thing to strongly support Israel. It’s another to use American aircraft and weapons to directly strike Iranian soil,” said Satterfield, stressing the strategic distinction.

🧨 Why Fordow is at the Eye of the Storm

Fordow is one of Iran’s most secure and controversial nuclear sites, deeply embedded underground. It has become a focal point in the ongoing nuclear standoff between Iran, Israel, and the U.S.

Last week, Israel reportedly struck Iran’s Natanz nuclear site, significantly damaging its infrastructure. Although Israel also attempted a strike on Fordow, the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) confirmed it failed to cause substantial damage.

⚠️ Fordow: Nearly Weapons-Grade?

In a confidential 2023 visit, the IAEA discovered uranium enriched up to 83.7% at Fordow—alarmingly close to weapons-grade (90%). The agency accused Iran of withholding critical information, but Tehran dismissed it as sabotage or manipulation, not deliberate intent.

💣 Can Fordow Be Destroyed?

Experts suggest that Israel lacks the military capability to eliminate Fordow using conventional means. The only plausible tactic would involve a high-risk commando raid, placing explosives inside the facility—a near-suicidal mission.

However, the U.S. holds a potential trump card: the Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP)—a 30,000-pound bunker-buster bomb capable of destroying deeply buried targets like Fordow. Deployed via a B-2 stealth bomber, this weapon may be the only realistic option to neutralize Fordow from the air.
