Will Iran Build a Nuclear Bomb? Rising Israeli Tensions Could Change Everything

In a dramatic shift in geopolitical tensions, Iran may be reconsidering its stance on nuclear weapons development—not out of ambition, but out of fear. According to Sayyed Hossein Mousavian, a former Iranian nuclear negotiator, continued military aggression from Israel could force Iran to pursue the development of a nuclear bomb.

Speaking to CNN, Mousavian revealed that Iran had no initial intention to build nuclear weapons, maintaining transparency with international agencies like the United Nations’ IAEA and participating in good-faith negotiations with world powers. However, everything changed after the United States withdrew from the 2015 nuclear agreement.

"When the U.S. walked away from the deal, it sent a dangerous message to the Iranian leadership. It made them believe that Washington and Tel Aviv are pursuing regime change," Mousavian said.

He added that the Iranian public is increasingly questioning the value of cooperation and transparency. Even with full compliance, Iran still faces threats of military intervention, which has led many to conclude that the only effective deterrent might be a nuclear weapon.

"People are saying: if transparency and diplomacy don't protect us, maybe it's time for resistance—maybe it's time for a bomb," Mousavian warned.

According to him, the pressure from Israel and the U.S. could be pushing Iran closer to the nuclear edge. He warned that unless diplomatic efforts are revived, Iran might eventually opt to develop a nuclear arsenal as a defensive strategy.

Mousavian emphasized that even war would not dismantle Iran’s nuclear knowledge base.

"You can’t bomb away knowledge. The real solution lies in diplomacy, not destruction."

This comes amid signs that Iran might be preparing to exit the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT)—a required step before openly developing a nuclear bomb. Such a move would dramatically escalate tensions in the Middle East, potentially sparking a new global crisis.

As the world watches, the question remains: Is the West unknowingly pushing Iran to go nuclear? Or can diplomacy still pull us back from the brink?
